  • Credits: 2
  • Language: Italian
  • Moduli: Carla Boga (Modulo 1) Stefania Albonetti (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemical methodologies for products and processes (cod. 5881)

Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to provide the basis for dealing with practical problems in the field of industrial biochemical processes for the application, use and obtaining of enzymes, and more generally, of proteins. Students will learn how to use software and databases useful for the analysis and management of biochemical processes, they will acquire the tools to address real problems.

Course contents

Visit to a biotechnological plant for the production of biogas.

Practical exercises in the computer room: use of software and databases useful for the analysis and management of biochemical processes and related exercises. Databases for protein structures (Protein data Bank and PDB Sum) and exercises that will cover specific examples and linked to the theoretical part of the course.

Practical determination of the concentration of a protein and of some fundamental parameters related to enzymatic activity. Immobilization of an enzyme.

Reactions mediated by commercial enzymes.

Each experience will be preceded by a short lesson  e in the classroom.

Teaching methods

Exercises in informatic room and in the laboratory with particular attention to practical aspects. Guided visits to biotechnological plants operating in the surroundings.

Assessment methods

The verification of the preparation will take place against the presentation of a report and / or the presentation of a project that the student will propose. The achievement by the student of an organic vision of the topics addressed and the ability to use the notions and cognitive tools learned during the course to tackle a typical industrial biochemistry process problem will be particularly appreciated.

To fulfill the attendance requirement, it is necessary to attend at least 75% of the practical experiences envisaged for the laboratory part. Attendance will be verified by signing an attendance sheet.

Evaluation criteria: successful completion of the laboratory course involves the release of a qualification.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Modules 1 and 2 [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas] online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree programme
