Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize the different kind of archives and be able to describe their features and constitutive funds; he will also be able to use inventories and to look for the sources useful for historical research.

Course contents

The course aims to offer a broad overview of the origin, development and management of both public (state and non-state) and private (personal, family and business) archives in the Italian context. In the private archives, in particular, students will be offered concrete examples of documentation and archival inventories, both paper and digital. There will also be exercises aimed at familiarizing with the description of archives and producers and with the primary sources.

For non-attending students, the program must consist of basic texts and an optional text of your choice. In the case of students who do not have basic notions of archiving, it is possible to replace the optional text with:

Teaching methods

Frontal lesson in Italian and exercises on documents and on the use of inventories and other archival tools.

Two visits will be organized:

  • 19/11/21: Archivio di Stato di Ravenna
  • 01/12/21: Soprintendenza archivistica di Bologna

Assessment methods

The exam will focus on the course program and, if the student requests it, on the content of one of the optional readings. The exercises, if carried out in writing, will contribute to the student evaluation.

The material will be shared in the 'Virtual Learning Resources' section. It should be noted that the initiatives (educational visits, seminars, conferences, book presentations ...) indicated and / or organized are to be considered supplementary to the teaching and will be recognized in the examination.
