Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at providing a general knowledge on the relationship between tourism and creative industries over the last two centuries in a global perspective. The course will start with the exposition of the most important tourist products and tourist destinations as they emerged in the XIXth and XXth century. Then the course will examine the emergence of creative tourism and the opportunities to generate added value from integrating tourism and creativity. At the end of the course students will be able to understand the creative industries and how these can be linked to specific places and experiences in order to foster tourism development.

Course contents

The course is organized into two parts

The first part will focus on the evolution of this industries over the last two centuries by developing the following topics:

1-Tourism today: trend, issues and perspectives

2. Soft and functional innovation

3. The first industrial revolution and the development of Western world

4. The age of Elite tourism in Western world

5 – The second industrial revolution

6- Mass tourism

7-Tourism in the Usa during the XX century

8 – Tourism in Asia during the XX century

9- Tourism in Africa during the XX century

 

The second part deals with the relationship between creative industries and tourism as it took shape over the last three decades

1- From the third industrial revolution to the present

2.Postmodernity

3- Tourism as a creative industry

4- The use of history in tourism

5- Tourism as a sustainable industry

Readings will be made available at the beginning of the course

Assessment methods

The exam is aimed at evaluating the skills and the critical abilities developed by the students as regards to: history of tourism, creative industries and the use of history in tourism.

The exam is composed of a written test (6 open questions), covering the topics of the lectures.

The mark for the written text is out of 30 points (5 points for each question), and the minimum required to pass the exam is 18/30.

It is possible to refuse the exam mark only once.

It is not possible to bring books, personal notes or electronic devices in the exam. Registration for the exam is compulsory, and students have to register through AlmaEsami [https://almaesami.unibo.it/almaesami/welcome.htm] according to the general rules of the School of Economics, Management and Statistics.
