Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Midwifery (cod. 9201)

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course the student acquires the ability to understand: the organization and the composition of living matter, the functions of cellular organelles, intercellular communication, the basic concepts of genetics and the applications in health care.

Course contents

Principles of Biology: Introduction to Biology; The general characteristics of living matter. The chemical constituents of living matter.

Cellular organization: Cell theory; Differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells; General organization of the eukaryotic cell; Structure and function of the nucleus and of the membranous apparatus (Rough and Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes); Mitochondria; Cytoskeleton.

Cell membrane: lipids and proteins: structure and function; structure and function of the cell membranes; The membrane transport mechanisms: diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport; Osmosis.

The gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes: Structure and function of nucleic acids; DNA and RNA. Genome organization; gene structure; the transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; messenger RNA maturation; the genetic code and the translation; gene expression regulation.

Cell division: cell cycle and its regulation; DNA duplication; DNA repair; mitosis; meiosis; cell death

Intercellular communication

Reproduction of organisms: reproductive strategies; gametogenesis; ovarian cycle and uterine cycle; fertilization.

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching.

Assessment methods

The final evaluation is aimed at defining the achievement of the following training objectives:

  • to Know the cell structure and the main organelle functions
  • to Know the main cellular processes: duplication, transcription and translation
  • to Know the mechanisms of cell division and cell death
  • to know the main mechanism of organism reproduction: meiosis, gametogenesis, fertilization

The examination is oral

The final grade will be obtained from the average of the marks reported in the individual modules of the integrated course.
