Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Orthopaedics techniques (cod. 8483)

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course the student acquires the ability to understand: the organization and the composition of living matter, the functions of cellular organelles, intercellular communication, the basic concepts of genetics and the applications in health care.

Course contents

Introduction to the Biology: the general characteristics of living matter; levels of biological organization and emergent properties; the chemical constituents of living matter; structure and function of the main biomolecules.

The cell: cell theory; general organization of the eukaryotic cell; differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells; structure and function of the nucleus, of the Endoplasmic Reticulum, of the Golgi Apparatus, of the lysosomes, of the peroxisomes; mitochondria; cytoskeleton (hints); structure and function of cell membranes; membrane transport mechanisms: diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport; osmosis.

Gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes: organization of the genome; gene structure; transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; maturation of messenger RNA; the genetic code and translation; gene expression regulation.

Cell division: cell cycle and its regulation; DNA replication; DNA repair; telomeres and telomerase; mitosis; Apoptosis.

Teaching methods

Frontal teaching

Assessment methods

The final evaluation is aimed at defining the achievement of the following training objectives:

  • to know the organization and composition of living matter
  • to know the cell structure and the main functions of cell organelles
  • to know the main molecular processes related to the conservation, expression and transmission of gene information
  • to know the principles of Mendelian genetics

The examination for the assessment of the achievement of the pre-established objectives will take place through oral verification. The final grade will be obtained from the average of the marks reported in the individual modules of the integrated course.
