Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop the student will be able to collect and organize complex informations in a coherent way, and apply critical analysis methods to the linguistic sciences. The student will be able to identify a research issue, relevant to philological research, and possess the knowledge to identify it and appropriately use necessary sources of information in order to address it.

"They are waiting to be made equal". Speaking with the "other".

The Mediterranean Sea, the cradle of Western civilization and traditionally a place of encounters and exchanges, has recently become an immense tomb because of those inhumane policies issued from Fortress Europe's war of exclusion against immigrants fleeing from wars and famines – a war fought in the name of selfishness and racism. The coasts of the Mediterranean, once a place of landing and salvation, now fend off unwanted "invasions". On dry land, European immigration policies (just as those of many other countries) also tend to build walls and barriers to obstruct the much-invoked need of exchanges and mutual acquaintance between individuals and cultures.

The title of the course is a quotation from don Lorenzo Milani, who considered his pupils living in a remote village on the Apennines as very similar to third-world children, both degraded to a position of inferiority. According to Milani, the only way to overturn the situation was for these children to be able to openly communicate with the rest of society.

The narrative exercises of the Intercultural writing workshop therefore aim at responding to this urgent need for dialogue and exchange beyond customary barriers. The workshop also intends to become a place for the experimentation of new communities through the recovery of stories and narratives that can help us to look beyond the stereotypes of this epic of migration.

Teaching methods

The workshop consists of eight sessions starting in February 2018 coordinated by the tutor Wu Ming 2. Following these sessions, students will have some time to edit and finalize the writing produced during the course. Finally, two remaining sessions will be dedicated to open discussions of each student's final products.

The meetings aim to develop a collective creativity, which brings together native identities and foreign presences. Therefore, the selection of participants in the class (who must apply to: https://eventi.unibo.it/scrittura-interculturale-2018 , by sending a short CV, from January 2018) takes into account the cultures/languages of origin of the students, and their Italian written proficiency.

Assessment methods

The purpose of the workshop is to create stories with an intercultural character, which demonstrate the student's mastery of both content and form. The writings will be collected and published online on the Eks&Tra website.

Documented attendance is mandatory for students enrolled in the following degree programs: Italianistica, Culture Letterarie Europee, Scienze Linguistiche, and other students incorporating the workshop into their academic curriculum. Completion of the workshop grants 6 CFU.

For students enrolled in the following degree programs: Lingua e Cultura italiana per stranieri of Scuola di Lingue e Letterature, Traduzione e Interpretazione, incorporating the workshop into their academic curriculum as attività alternativa, 66779 – LABORATORI E ALTRE ATTIVITA’ (LM), the completion of the workshop grants 3 CFU.

The final grade will be based on the evaluation of each student's written products.

Teaching tools

The intercultural creative writing workshop is a collaborative project between the Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies at Università di Bologna and the Eks&Tra Association. The goal of this workshop is to offer applicable knowledge for an evolving citizenry.
