66942 - Bio-Organic Chemistry

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

The student will gain a good knowledge of bio-organic chemistry, that includes the structure and reactivity of biological molecules, such as peptides, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. The student will also study the most important metabolic pathways (both anabolism and katabolism), including all the reaction mechanisms.

Course contents

Biomolecules: lipids, carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, enzimes, coenzimes Lipids metabolism. Carbohydrates metabolism. Amino acids metabolism. Nucleic acids metabolism. Metabolism includes anabolism and katabolism. Biosynthesis of some natural compounds compared with some simple synthesis of the same compounds.

Readings/Bibliography

Chimica Bio-organica - John McMurry, Tadhg Begley - Zanichelli
I principi di biochimica di Lehninger sesta edizione - David. L. Nelson, Michael M. Cox - Zanichelli

Teaching methods

The topics listed in the program will be fully covered, with a particular attention to the reaction mechanisms.

Assessment methods

The preparation is tested by a oral exam.
