Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

By the end of the course, students: know evidence-based interventions aimed at improving well-being, their mechanisms of action, potential beneficial and adverse effects; -are able to evaluate the efficacy of well-being interventions and plan research and intervention projects to reduce risk in populations with unhealthy lifestyle and promote adaptation and self-management in patients with chronic and progressive diseases.

Contenuti

Module 1 (Professor Carrozzino):

The course will cover the following topics:

1) Conceptual and methodological principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

2) Conceptual and methodological principles of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT).

3) The therapeutic relationship.

4) Structuring CBT.

5) Recognizing and modifying automatic thoughts.

6) Identifying and modifying schemas.

7) A brief introduction to Schema Therapy.

8) Well-Being Therapy (WBT): the conceptual background.

9) The methodological framework of WBT.

10) The main clinical applications of WBT.

11) The clinician and the soul: an introduction to Logotherapy.

12) The inferiority feeling and striving for significance: an introduction to the Adlerian Psychotherapy.

The course will take place during the first semester (Academic Year 2022-2023) at the Department of Psychology “Renzo Canestrari”, University of Bologna, Viale Berti Pichat 5, 40127, Bologna, Italy.

 

Module 2 (Professor Chattat):

The main content of the module will be about living well with chronic disease, focusing on olders populations.

The topic which will be addressed are about:

  1. The demographic change and the challenge of Chronic disease
  2. Health dimensions and chronic disease
  3. The neurocognitive disorders
  4. Frailty and dependency in olders
  5. The psychosocial model in geriatrics: promoting living well
  6. Assessment of psychosocial needs olders
  7. Assessment of psychosocial needs of caregivers
  8. Planning psychosocial interventions
  9. Type and methods of psychosocial interventions
  10. Palliative and end of life care

The following readings are mandatory:

1) Fava, G. A. (2016). Well-being therapy. Treatment Manual and Clinical Applications. Basel: Karger, limited to the following chapters: Part I (The Development), chapters 1 (The Background), 2 (The Philosophy Student and the Pursuit of a Well-Being-Enhancing Strategy), 3 (The Process of Validation of Well-Being Therapy), 4 (Initial Evaluation). Part II (The Eight-Session Program of Well-Being Therapy), chapters 5 (Session 1), 6 (Session 2), 7 (Session 3), 8 (Session 4), 9 (Session 5), 10 (Session 6), 11 (Session 7), and 12 (Session 8).

 

2) Wright, J. H., Brown, G. K., Thase, M. E., & Basco, M. R. (2017). Learning cognitive-behavior therapy: An illustrated guide. Arligton: American Psychiatric Association Publishing, limited to the following chapters: 1 (Basic Principles of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy), 2 (The Therapeutic Relationship), 4 (Structuring and Educating), 5 (Working With Automatic Thoughts), and 8 (Modifying Schemas).

 

The two treatment manuals will be discussed and reviewed during class to facilitate the co-construction of knowledge and to enhance critical thinking and the process of clinical reasoning. Additional bibliographic references will be suggested during the course.

 

Module 2 (Professor Chattat):

Manthorpe J., Moniz-Cook E. (2020) Timely psychosocial intervention in dementia care.

During the course selected and updated reading will be shared.

Metodi didattici

Module 1 (Professor Carrozzino):

Academic lectures will be combined with practical exercises and discussion sessions. Cooperative teaching methods will be used and include “learning by doing” (i.e., assignments, group presentations, role-playing activities, and video illustrations of patient-clinician interactions). Class attendance and active participation are required since they are essential elements to achieve expected learning outcomes.

 

Module 2 (Professor Chattat):

The objective of the course is allow students to evaluate and plan psychosocial intervention for older people with chronic disease. The way to achieve this outcomes is to present knowledge about assessment and intervention and to use clinical case as well as movies in order to train students in achieving this objective. Small group work will also be planned.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Module 1 (Professor Carrozzino):

A final exam, which consists of an interview, will be scheduled at the end of the course. Students will complete an oral examination where they will answer questions about well-being interventions in clinical psychology. The acquired knowledge will be evaluated based on the extent to which answers are adequate and comprehensive. Clinical skills, particularly critical thinking and clinical reasoning, will also be evaluated. The highest score (i.e., 30 cum laude) will be assigned to students demonstrating an extensive knowledge and understanding of the subject and providing answers based on their clinical reasoning. The use of books, notes and slides is not allowed during the exam. More details will be provided during class.

Please note that the final grade will be the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the two modules of well-being interventions in clinical psychology (i.e., module 1 by Professor Carrozzino and module 2 by Professor Chattat). 

 

Module 2 (Professor Chattat):

For this module a quiz approach (questions with multiple responses) regarding the different topics addressed during the course will be used. In this way it will be possible to evaluate the overall knowledge of the students.
