99477 - Physics

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Docente: Emanuele Paci
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: FIS/07
  • Language: English
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Genomics (cod. 9211)

Learning outcomes

The successful student is familiar with the laws of physics, including the bases of thermodynamics, electrical forces and magnetism. The student is able to solve simple physical problems.

Course contents

The course is focused on the fundamental and applied physics relevant to genomics and molecular biology. The student will learn how the properties of living systems emerge from the microscopic properties of atoms; the relation between thermodynamics and kinetics of intermolecular interactions.

1) Revision of calculus; Taylor expansion; trajectories;

2) conservative forces; gravitation and electrostatics; numerical determination of trajectories

3) Work, power, conservation of energy; conservation of momentum; Newton laws

4) Thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gas; introduction to probability and statistics; statistical mechanics; entropy; free energy; intermolecular interactions; binding constants; chemical kinetics; rates.
