Learning outcomes

The course provides knowledge on national, European and international sources of food law and on the bodies involved in decision-making processes. All according to a methodological approach focused on the protection of the multiple prerogatives held by consumers with regard to the production, distribution and consumption of food. At the end of the course the student will have skills relating to food labeling and distribution, the valorisation of gastronomic specialties and organic production, and consumer protection.

Course contents

Fundamental legal notions: law and right; the notion of State; fundamental elements of community and national regulations; the system of sources of law. Food Law: the sources of Food Law, at a national, community and international level; the market for agricultural and agro-food products; the consumer's right to information, guaranteed by the legislation on food labeling and traceability with which the European legislator has imposed stringent information obligations on the producer and other operators in the GMO sector; the protection tools currently available to consumers in the event of violation of the safety regulations of what is defined as "a market for healthy and safe foods", as well as those established to support the transparency of commercial operations; producer responsibility for defective products and the sanctioning system in the food sector); the rules on food hygiene (the "hygiene package"; the HACCP system; traditional food products; the main rules on feed hygiene).

The verification of learning takes place through the final exam, exclusively oral, which verifies the acquisition of knowledge relating to the topics covered by the course.
