Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: learns the main features of the jazz improvisation; knows and the most important periods and the main protagonists of the history of jazz; analyzing the transcriptions of some solos by masters of jazz like Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, learns the most important features of improvising a jazz melodic line; learns the most important characteristic of rhythm and meter in jazz, with particular emphasis to the concepts of ‘swing’ and ‘groove’, and of the different kinds of articulation and pronunciation of the musical phrases in the jazz idiom, which gives liveliness and deepness to the improvisation of a soloist.
