96423 - Production of Raw Materials for the Cosmetic Industry

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Docente: Matteo Pori
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: CHIM/06
  • Language: English
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Rimini
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Advanced Cosmetic Sciences (cod. 9225)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has achieved theoretical knowledge on the industrial preparative and synthetic technologies. The student knows the industrial synthesis of the most important classes of the organic and inorganic compounds used and is the cosmetic formulations. The student knows the topics connected to the process/and production management. The student knows how to use basic statistical tools to measure the production stability capability

Course contents

Production concepts for the chemical industry:

logistics

raw materials

process safety and process management

equipment

Synthesis and production of the most important classes of raw materials for the cosmetic industry:

1) Fatty products

2) Ammonium Salts

3) Silicon based products

4) Sunscreens

3) Esters and aromatic products

Readings/Bibliography

Formulas, Ingredients and Production of CosmeticsTechnology of Skin- and Hair-Care Products in Japan Autors: Iwata, Hiroshi, Shimada, Kunio

Papers and other materials will be shared during the course and/or uploaded on the website

Teaching methods

Topics of the course are presented and discussed during the lecture with practical examples. Each lecture will be 50% theory and 50% exercise.

We will spend time on examples of the production of real ingredients like octabenzone, some suncreens, esters, silicones. A good interactions is pivotal.

Assessment methods

Final assessment will be written. A test will be shared by mail after the end of the course.

1) One open question about one topic of the course (silicone polymers, fatty acid synthesis…) (20%)

2) One chemical synthesis of one cosmetic with some open and closed questions and some calculations (60%)

3) One exercise of statistics (20%)

4) One paper to prepare a short PPT to have the maximum (30 L)
