Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Docente: Kevin Kroninger
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: FIS/01
  • Language: English
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Advanced Methods in Particle Physics (cod. 5810)

Learning outcomes

This subject focus on experimental techniques necessary to perform measurements in the field of particle physics. The student will learn in-depth aspects in the subject area, with particular attention to data analysis. He/She will acquire the necessary knowledge and skill to treat with complex measurements and systematics effects. In addition to professional training, at the end of the course, the student will be able to read critically original literature.

Course contents

Place of teaching: Technische Universität Dortmund, Dortmund

Basic experimental methods in accelerator-based particle physics; interpretation of the data; methods of conducting data analysis including data preparation, physics objects, statistical modelling and the treatment of systematic uncertainties; phenomenology of different processes and recent experimental results including searches for new phenomena, precision measurements as well as an overview of current and future experiments.

Readings/Bibliography

Scientific literature and specific publications are distributed during the class.

Teaching methods

Lecture (80%) and problem-based teaching (20%)

Assessment methods

Examination: Oral or written examination.
