Learning outcomes
This course will give students the ability to solve problems of first design of apparatuses and set of apparatuses for membrane separation processes, understanding objectives, constraints, degrees of freedom and available solutions. This course will also allow students the gain direct experience in functional characterization of membranes suitable to be used for different separation purposes and in start-up and managing of few separation processes.
Course contents
- development of calculation tools for the solutions of desing problems in different membrane separation processes and modules:
a) gas separation;
b) desalination;
c) pervaporation;
d) microfiltration/ultrafiltration
- set up of lab procedures for the characterization of key membrane properties in different separation processes:
e) gas permeability/selectivity for dense membrane;
f) solvent permeability and rejection factor for micro/ultrafiltration membrane.
