Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) appreciate the importance of understanding global health policy-making and global health governance; 2) analyse key global health policy issues and their links to national health policies and systems; 3) understand the global health financing architecture; 4) develop critical thinking on how to address current and future global health challenges.

Course contents

This course examines global health issues from a health policy and systems perspective. It aims to provide an overview of key global health policies and an introduction to key global health challenges, issues and solutions.

The course covers the following topics Global health trends and estimates of health indicators; Global health policy landscape. Health systems approaches to global health challenges. Global governance and health. Global health financing architecture. Financing health systems and universal health coverage. Evidence for global health policy.

Teaching methods

Lectures, case studies, group discussions and presentations.

10 hours of the course will be dedicated to: 1) webinars given by global health leaders on “hot topics” in global health moderated by the professor and with a Q & A session in which students will have the opportunity to interact with the leaders; 2) webinars in which the students will discuss a group work assigned to them and receive feedback from the professor.

Assessment methods

30% Group assignment

70% Open books exam.
