Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, after a first insight into the material constitution and degradation phenomena of different type of works of art, learners will be aquainted with the role that chemistry plays in the field of restoration with particular reference to the development of new restoration materials such as protective coatings and cleaning agents (solvent/gel systems) used to intervene on metal, ceramic and paper heritage substrates as well as canvas/panel paintings and mural paintings.

Moreover, learners will be acquainted with some basic concepts of preventive conservation with particular reference to the role palyed by some environmental pollution agents in the deterioration of works of art exposed both outdoor and indoor as well as monitoring and mitigation strategies.
