Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will learn topics related to the design of a railway infrastructure from a geometric and structural point of view; topics related to the design of the pavements, the geometry, the signs and the "air side" service for the airport infrastructures will be treated. The theme of the connections between the various mode of transport in urban area will also be developed with particular reference to the multimodality and the accessibility of the nodes.

Requirements/Prior knowledge
The knowledge learned in the “Sustainable transport system design” course can support some issues.
Course contents
Planning and design of railways and airports: geometric design consistency, materials and construction techniques for pavements. The Focus will have an orientation to issues concerning Sustainable mobility in urban areas.
AIRPORT CONSTRUCTIONS
- Air side geometric design;
- Runway: length evaluation, orientation, declared distances and request distances;
- Design methods for airport pavements;
- Obstacle limitation surfaces;
- Visual aids for navigation
- Elements of airport management
- Programmatic tools for the development of an airport infrastructure
- Basic notions for the design of the terminal system: dimensioning of the infrastructural subsystems
- Development of the landside system and interconnected facilities
RAILWAY CONSTRUCTIONS
- Design of the railway track structure: rails, sleepers, fastening system, ballast, sub-ballast, subgrade;
- Switches and crossings;
- Railway stations;
- Railway maintenance and monitoring processes;
- Railway high-speed tracks and trains.
- Metropolitan railway systems;
- Urban transport.

Teaching methods
Theoretical lessons and practical exercises. The lessons will be divided into a first part dedicated to airports (Sept-Oct) and a second dedicated to railways (Nov-Dec).
Assessment methods
Written exam comprising a part on railway issues and another on airport ones. The exam is passed by reaching the sufficiency in both parts.
