Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will acquire the basic knowledge about the characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms and viruses, the cellular and molecular basis of microbial and viral pathogenicity and the characteristics of microorganism / host interactions. The students will also learn the microbiological control methods applied to field of cosmetic products.

• bacteria, fungi/yeasts, viruses

• contaminant microbes in cosmetic ingredients

• microbial content and product safety

• sanitary practices in cosmetic manufacturing

• cosmetic microbiology test methods

• molecular biology test methods

• preservation of cosmetics from infectious agents and hurdle technology

• antimicrobial mechanisms of selected preservatives and the bacterial response

• ingredients affecting preservatives

• safety and toxicological properties of preservatives

• considerations of cosmetic preservation from the consumer point of view

• microbiology of the skin and factors modifying cutaneous microflora

• governmental regulations and microbiological aspects of manufacturing cosmetics and drugs

• global regulation of preservatives and cosmetic preservatives
