Learning outcomes

At the end of the internship the student acquires a direct knowledge of a working environment coherent with the studies in Statistics. The student develops a deep understanding of the organization she/he's working in and is able to conduct and organize the statistical analysis useful to answer empirical questions of interest. She/he also enhances abilities to work in teams.

Course contents

The internship is compulsory for the students of the Curriculum in Official Statistics (EMOS students) and is developed on the basis of a training project agreed with the host organization. At the end of the internship the student acquires a direct knowledge of a working environment coherent with her/his studies in statistics. The student develops a deep understanding of the organization she/he's working in and is able to conduct and organize statistical analyses useful to answer empirical questions of interest. She/he also enhances abilities to work in teams.

Host organizations are National Statistical Institutes, National Central Banks, Other National Authorities, European Institutions and International Organizations, universities, research institutions, and private companies: any organisation producing or dealing with statistics and data, as long as the work performed is relevant to official statistics and based on the EMOS learning outcomes.

The minimum duration for both in-country and cross-border internships is 8 weeks. This guarantees that 10 ECTS can be granted to students for their internship.

Eurostat can host students for unpaid traineeships for a maximum of 4 weeks.

Financially supported internship:

• Financially supported cross-border traineeships in organisations forming the European Statistical System (ESS) and European System of Central Banks (ESCB) - EMOS students can submit a general application or can apply for specific internship offers abroad
• Blue Book traineeship programme: twice a year the European Commission offers 5-month paid traineeships. Several Blue Book trainee positions are allocated to Eurostat each session.
