Learning outcomes

The course aims at analyzing the growth of a European public sphere. At the end of the course, students will be able to recognize the development of rights, as well as to assess the degree to which these have become common throughout different national systems, and to develop arguments relating to controversial rights.

Course contents

Why is it that democracies differ so dramatically when it comes to protecting rights? Some democracies, such as France, are fiercely secular; while others, such as the UK, have an established church and teach religion in state schools. Some allow abortion, others restrict it. This course explores and compares these rights across democracies, with a focus on Europe.
