Academic Year 2020/2021

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 8896)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 8896)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has skills on the design and test of technologies and materials applied in the biomedical sector.

Course contents

The course will transfer knowledge on:

  • Fundamental structure and properties of the materials used in the biomedical field: ceramics and glasses, metallic biomaterials, polymeric biomaterials.
  • Structure, composition and characteristics of the main tissues involved in tissue engineering.
  • Interaction between biomaterials and living tissues. The importance of surface chemistry for biomedical devices.
  • Applications of biomaterials for the production of biomedical devices: biomaterials for dental implants, ophtalmic biomaterials, hip prosthesis, burn dressing biomaterials, cardiovascular medical devices, scaffolds for tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, sensors and actuators, magnetic particles for biomedical applications.
  • Rapid prototyping and custom-made devices.
  • Specific processes for the biomedical field: sterilization, biomaterials associated infections, antimicrobial surfaces.
  • Testing of biomaterials.
