Learning outcomes
Course contents
Incorporating material ranging from World War I to the Gulf Wars
the course will focus on the relations between language and war.
The subject will be treated in two directions: analysing official
propaganda on the one hand and exploring what happens to everyday
language in times of war on the other.
Readings/Bibliography
Reading materials and audio-visual resources will be distributed in
class.
Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions and student-led presentations.
Assessment methods
Attending students:
The exam for attending students consists of a written test at the
end of the course (approx. 2 hours) regarding global and specific
comprehension and a translation from German into Italian (bilingual
dictionary allowed for both parts). Essential requirement: 80%
attendance. No oral examination.
Non-attending students:
For non-attending students the exam consists of a written test
(approx. 2 hours) and an oral examination.
Written test:
global and specific comprehension, translation from German into
Italian (bilingual dictionary allowed for both parts)
N.B. It is necessary to pass the written test in order to sit the
oral examination.
Oral examination:
The examination language is German. Both exams (written and oral)
are held on the same day. Students are required to get an 18/30
mark (or higher) in order to sit the oral examination.
The contents of the oral examination must be discussed with the
professor a month before the examination.
