Learning outcomes

At the end of this introductory course, the students should be able to interact in stereotypical and most common everyday life situations. They will be expected to understand and produce simple oral and written texts in a manner that demonstrates knowledge of Bulgarian socio-cultural characteristics.

These lessons deal with, among other things, situations such as introducing oneself, shopping, going to a doctor, etc.

Course contents

Phonology and graphical system
Vowels and vowel reduction in standard Bulgarian.
Consonants: soft and hard consonants. Regressive assimilation (voicing and devoicing).
Orthographical principles.
Morphology
Nouns. Grammatical gender, number and definiteness. Vocative.
Pronouns. Clitics and clitic doubling.
Adjectives and adverbs. Formation of comparatives and superlatives.
Conjugations and prepositions.
Interjections and particles. Да, ли, не, си and се particles.
Verbs. I, II, III conjugation. Aspectual pairs. Tense system: present and future.
Syntax
Declarative statements. Neutral and emphatic word order. Subject omission.
Polar questions and к-questions.
Negative statements. Double negation.
Basic types of complex sentences.

Class participation and a prompt completion of homework assignments: 30% of the final grade.
