Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have a basic knowledge of the Ethiopian culture, as well as of the fundamentals of the Ethiopian languages. The student will be able to discuss the  subjects examined during the classes and contextualize them with reference to the assigned texts.

Course contents

The first part (30 hours) will be devoted to a general analysis of the languages of the Horn of Africa and the problems related to their classification and  provides a basic knowledge of the Amharic language (Ethiopia), mainly alphetization and conversation skills.


Readings/Bibliography

Dr. Zeleke Eresso and Prof. Tekeste Negash will provide material in Amharic at the beginning of the course.

Assessment methods

An oral exam, during which the student will be evaluated according to the linguistic abilities he/she has acquired during the course. The students not attending the course will be evaluated through an oral exam covering all the assigned texts.
