37348 - Electricity Production and Conversion Systems T

Academic Year 2019/2020

Learning outcomes

The course aims providing basic knowledge about the functioning and operation of electric power generation systems from different primary energy sources (including renewables) in a liberalised electricity market, as well as the operating principles of the main electrical machines and static conversion schemes used in interconnected power systems.

Course contents

The Course 37348 - SISTEMI DI PRODUZIONE E CONVERSIONE DELL'ENERGIA ELETTRICA T (9 credits) for the first cycle Degree in Energy Engineering is composed by two modules:

  • the first module (6 credits) is devoted to the electric power generation
  • the second module (3 credits) is devoted to the electric power conversion.

The first module is a standalone course for the students of the first cycle Degree in Electrical Engineering named "31407 - PRODUZIONE DELL'ENERGIA ELETTRICA T".

Course contents of module 1 (6 credits)

  • for the students of the third year of the 1st Cycle Degree in Energy Engineering
  • for the students of the third year of the 1st Cycle Degree in Electrical Energy Engineering

- alternators, no-load and under load operation, active and reactive power expressions, parallel operation with the grid, steady state power-load angle curve, capability curves;

- electricity transmission, equations and equivalent electrical circuits of power lines, power flows expressions, relationship between the voltage of a network bus and the power exchanged in that bus, the “DC” power flow calculation;

- frequency control, speed-droop characteristic of the prime mover governor, tie-line frequency control;

- economic dispatch, characteristics of steam turbine generator units, the effects of technical constraints of power plants and transmission lines, hydrothermal scheduling, electricity market models, management of constraints in bilateral negotiations and in centralized markets, nodal energy prices, transmission rights markets.

- wind farms, relationship between wind speed and converted power, wind turbine controls and regions of turbine speed control, variable speed turbine configurations.

- photovoltaic systems, operating principle and equivalent electrical circuit of photovoltaic cells, current-voltage characteristic and effect of radiation, temperature and losses, power-voltage characteristic and maximum power point tracking.

Course contents of module 2 (3 credits)

  • for the students of the third year of the 1st Cycle Degree in Energy Engineering

- Layout of electric power systems

- Power transformers

- Per-unit method

- DC-machines

- Induction machines

- Outlines of static conversion. AC-DC, DC-DC and DC-AC conversion.

- Storage systems: applications in the electrical network

Teaching methods

The course is delivered in frontal lessons (for a total of 60 hours for module 1 and 30 hours for module 2). The topics of the course are treated theoretically and through numerical examples. During the lessons, use is made of the didactic material previously made available to the students, except for possible seminars.

Assessment methods

The exam is oral, it is uniquefor both modules and requires the answer to at least three questions. During the oral test, the student may be asked to solve an exercise on the calculation of power flows, or on frequency regulation or economic dispatch, so the student is asked to take a calculator.

The mark is assigned, taking into account the cfu of the two modules, depending on the level of knowledge of the program topics, the ability to use the technical vocabulary appropriately and to briefly state the most important concepts, the assumptions adopted, the procedures, the results.
