Learning outcomes

The Seminar, organized in collaboration with the Orlando Association, is aimed to provide a critical gender perspective on some current cultural, philosophical, legal and socio-political practices. Its focus is on the geopolitical contexts of Europe and the Mediterranean area, with an interest in the features characterizing our technical and cognitive practices.

Course contents

The Seminar, titled "Women in Italy between XX and XXI Century", is aimed at identifying the peculiar traits of women's movements and feminist thought in Italy against the background of European and global phenomena. We will focus on the subjective positions of those concerned, as well as on gender relations, on the theoretical and scientific developments affecting women's issues, and on the way the law has evolved in Italy through the advocacy of women. The seminar will open with lectures on women's history and thought and on the role that legislation has played in women's lives and relationships in Italy. With the help of female historians, social scientists, literati, and political scientists, we will present the figures that loom large (such as Montessori, Banti, De Cespedes, Morante, Campo, Lonzi, Putino, and Melandri) and look inside the places where life is experienced (the family, study, and work environments). Innovation and scientific thought will be addressed by women who work in the natural, biological, and neurological sciences, drawing on the STEM database (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) that has been created to fight gender stereotyping, which undervalues the role of women in every area of STEM research. As in past years, the seminar will take account of the way that technology is changing and the impact of this development on our lives. The figures and historical junctures we want to focus on will be discussed by women professors and experts not only from Italy but also from Africa who have migrated here. Woven into the seminar are issues relating to birth, life, and death, which will be addressed in connection with the Italian legislation that spans from the 1970s to the present. We will also have women instructors and young researchers addressing the issues relating to life and death such as they present themselves in the current landscape.
