Learning outcomes

By the end of the laboratory the student: knows how to apply basic skills in musical writing and reading; is able to apply his/her knowledge in reading music and in the analysis of simple musical scores; understands the melodic and harmonic elements of simple pieces of music during the listening; is able to use some music writing softwares with competence.

Course contents

During this laboratoyr, ideal continuation of the course of “Musical Theory. Institutions”, students will be involved in practical exercises on music reading, ear training, intonation and music writing.

Through a series of cooperative activities, students will try to produce some musical elaborations that will allow the strengthening and development of rhythmic-melodic abilities, also thanks to specific exercises on the main parameters of sound.

Some basic concepts related to the use of specific music notation softwares will also be introduced, and students will be asked to practice on them.

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching materials and handouts will be distributed during the laboratory and will be available online. The following manuals are recommended:

• Lorenzo Ferrero, Manuale di scrittura musicale (Turin, EDT, 2007)
• Elaine Gould, Behind Bars: The Definitive Guide to Music Notation (London, Faber Music, 2011) – in part. for foreign student. 

It is also recommended to install on your PC the MuseScore music notation software, available for free download at <https://musescore. org/it>

Laboratory exercises in the classroom.

Assessment methods

Students will have to demonstrate their correct comprehension through the exercises and tabs the teacher will assign them during the lessons, and which will be verified during the oral exam.
