Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student has skills to perform simple processes simulation and to critically assess the results.

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of Material and Energy balance, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics and basic knowlwdge of Chemical Engineering Unit Operations is required to attend with profit this course.

The lectures will be in Italian. Course material is mainly in English. Oral or written feedback and/or clarifications will be provided in English on demand.

Course Contents

Use of a commercial simulation software for the resolution of exercises presented in class.
The exercises cover:

  • simple chemical processes sections where the focus will be the material and energy balance and the use of recycling streams;
  • simple chemical reactors including conversion reactor, equilibrium reactor, kinetic reactor;
  • simulation of equipments including pump and compressors, heat exchanger,absorbers/strippers;
  • simple distillation operations including shortcut method and rigorous methods.

For each exercise, the student will produce a simulation model, will answer questions given in class and will produce a synthetic report which will be discussed with the lecturer.

Teaching methods

The course will be carried out from remotly or in the computer room. Each session will start with a short introduction explaining the exercises to be resolved with the simulator and the questions to be answered.
