Learning outcomes

M-PSI/05: At the end of the activity students will know: how to apply community psychology methods and principles to the development of an intervention and the dynamics of different groups in social and community contexts

M-PSI/08: At the end of the classes, students will be able to carry out an appropriate assessment and will know how to apply the correct clinical methodology according to the single clinical case.

Course contents

The course will take place during the first semester for the two M-PSI/05 modules (October 2019-January 2020) and during the second semester for the M-PSI/08 part (March-May 2020) at the Department of Psychology, Cesena Campus (address: piazza Aldo Moro, 90 and v.le Europa, 115).

M-PSI/05 (Module 1 Social psychology, Teacher: Elisabetta Crocetti)

The laboratory will allow students to learn and apply the methods and instruments of social psychology with respect to the experience of migration. Particular attention will be payed to identity formation pathways in young migrants. Different types of acculturation orientations will be discussed, focusing on the perspectives of migrants as well as of the host society.

The laboratory includes the following activities:

  1. Analysis of identity pathways in young migrants:
    1. The migration experience as a process of identity redefinition
    2. Acculturative processes and ethnic identity
    3. Effects of identity formation on the well-being of migrants
  2. Critical analysis of interventions aimed at promoting identity formation in young migrants. Evaluation of objectives, methods, feasibility, and effectiveness of the interventions. Discussion of their strengths and limitations.
  3. Planning of a new psychosocial intervention (objectives and methodologies).

M-PSI/08 (Modules 2/1 and 2/2 Clinical psychology, Teachers: Jenny Guidi and Ornella Montebarocci)

Identification of signs, symptoms and syndromes in clinical psychology. Differential diagnosis. Formulation of diagnostic hypotheses and treatment planning.

References will be provided at the beginning and during the laboratory activities, in relation to the specific interventions that students will choose to develop.

Teaching methods

M-PSI/05:

In addition to brief lectures, teaching methods will include:

  • Practical exercise in small groups
  • Guided discussions
  • Literature research
  • Presentation and evaluation of a scientific article
  • Analysis of quantitative data

M-PSI/08:

Teaching methods will include group work, clinical case presentations, role-playing, practical examples of psychological interventions.

Assessment methods

M-PSI/05:

To pass the exam students are requested to:

  • attend classes and participate to discussions
  • participate actively to a group presentation concerning the critical analysis of an intervention
  • contribute to a group presentation concerning the planning of a new intervention

M-PSI/08:

Active participation to the laboratory course is essential in order to get admitted to the final examination. The final evaluation will consist in a written exam concerning topics discussed during classes. This final examination will take place during the last class of the laboratory course.

M-PSI/05: video projector, computer, and documents provided during classes

M-PSI/08: Video projector, DVD player, PC. Handouts will be provided during classes.
