Learning outcomes

The activation of a course on Semiotics and Veterinary Internal Medicine of  Companion Animals which focuses on pet, responds on the need to provide students, already in the fourth year of study, specific training useful to adequately fellow the course of Clinical and Therapy of Companion Animals of the follow year. In particular, the course of Semiotics and Veterinary Internal Medicine of  Companion Animals, aims to provide students with the integration of the semiologic data and the knowledge of the most important diseases of medical interest that may involve several organ systems. At the end  of the course the student is able to interpret the symptoms related to the diseases of different organs and learn about the ethiology, pathogenesis and clinical picture of the main diseases of the medical field, most frequently affecting dogs and cat.

Course contents

The approach to the patient is carried out through the collection of symptoms that characterize the major diseases of dogs and cats, and the study of the causes of medical interest that may determine them. In particular we will study the following chapters: regurgitation, vomiting, diarrhea, acute abdomen, enlarged abdomen, sneezing, nasal discharge, cough, tachypnea, fatigue, polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, lymph adenomegalia, pale mucous membrane, asthenia, syncope, head tilt, paralysis, paresis and skin changes.  

Medical coat and stethoscope is mandatary for the practice.  Disposable gloves will be provided, if necessary.

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of lectures (36 hours) and practical classes (12 x 4 hours). In order to allow an effective participation in tutorials, practical classes will be made by dividing the students into four groups, each of which will be paid the same hours of exercise. The exercises are designed to acquire, on patients of the Animal Hospital, the proper execution of specific objectives of the different organ systems.
