04524 - Numerical Analysis

Course Unit Page

Academic Year 2018/2019

Learning outcomes

The general ideas and concepts of scientific computation and error analysis are introduced. The lessons are mostly concerned with the treatment of traditional mathematical problems and the aspects which are of importance for the design of algorithms are examined closely.

Course contents

Some general principles of numerical calculation, how to obtain and estimate accuracy in numerical calculations. Approximation of functions and solution of the approximation of experimental data by the method of least squares. Finding roots of a nonlinear equation, numerical integration, differentiation and interpolation. Numerical methods for the solution of systems of linear equations.
For chemistry students: after the theoretical part there will be  laboratory module (dr. Germana Landi) with the following contents: basic use of electronic sheets; laboratory of matrices with Matlab; graphics with Matlab; solution of the numerical problems treated in the theoretical topics in Matlab.

Teaching methods

Tasks are assigned weekly  for learning the presented concepts.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning is done through an oral exam in which students must demonstrate knowledge of and be able to explain the most important numerical methods exposed during the course. The vote on the examination takes into account also any exercises assigned during the hours of laboratory and that the student plays and delivery. Examination want to evaluate how much the student has acquired in order to be able to solve practical problems of scientific computing.
