Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows the semi structured and unstructured data models in relationship with the central constructors of SQL/XML and XQuery; - knows the basic techniques of information retrieval and text analysis; - is capable of designing and developing a datawarehouse; - is capable of conducting a project using the basic data mining techniques.

Course contents

  • Structured, unstructured and semi structured data models.
  • The limits of SQL.
  • An introduction to SQL/XML and XQuery.
  • The information retrieval models (boolean and vectors space) and web information retrieval (PageRank).
  • The dataware housing (OLAP) and data mining (Machine Learning).

Teaching methods

During the course lessons we will discuss several issues related to the semi structured data and unstructured data management.

Assessment methods

In order to take part in an exam session, you must register on Almaesami before 7 days of the exam date. Those who do not enroll in time will not be able to take the exam, and will have to wait for the next date.

The assessment takes place with the discussion of a project or the discussion of an article. The studente can choose whether to make a project or study an article.

  • Project: the student, after the instructor's approval, carries out a project on a topic of the course. The results of the project will have to be discussed during the exam through  presentation slides prepared by the student.
  • Article: the student explore an advanced topic starting from a research paper amng those proposed. The content of the paper and the related topic must be discussed during the exam through presentation slides prepared by the student.
