Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

Obiettivo del corso è quello di fornire agli studenti gli elementi teorici essenziali alla interpretazione dei fenomeni bellici avvenuti nel corso della storia moderna e contemporanea. Al termine del corso, lo studente conosce le principali visioni strategiche messe in atto dalle grandi potenze, ed è in grado di utilizzare gli strumenti concettuali propri della disciplina, mostrando di saper interpretare le politiche di sicurezza e di difesa delle potenze europee e degli Stati Uniti, con particolare riferimento al periodo successivo alla guerra fredda.

Contenuti

Le lezioni ripercorrono cronologicamente l'evoluzione del concetto di strategia dall'antichità fino all'epoca contemporanea. Il corso analizza le varie visioni sulla guerra, le principali teorie strategiche (con particolare riferimento al pensiero di Clausewitz),  e la trasformazione del fenomeno bellico nella storia (dall'era moderna fino alla fine della guerra fredda). Saranno poi discussi gli sviluppi contemporanei, a partire dal dibattito sulla natura del sistema internazionale dopo il crollo del muro di Berlino, le principali minacce alla sicurezza presenti nell'ambiente strategico internazionale (con particolare attenzione ai conflitti civili, al terrorismo, agli stati falliti e alla proliferazione nucleare), e alle risposte strategiche della comunità internazionale e delle grandi potenze.
