Learning outcomes
The theme of Seminar 3 changes every year but is always aimed at providing students with in-depth insights into scientific and instrumental innovations in the field of plant protection against adversities, mainly of biotic nature, through contributions from external experts to UNIBO, both academic and technical.
Course contents
Seminar 3 for the current academic year 2025–26 will be dedicated to several innovative diagnostic methodologies and technical tools for the protection of plants against diseases and insects, and will include contributions from researchers and experts from national and international institutions.
It will take place over three afternoons in May 2026 and will be held exclusively in person.
The first date is May 6 (from 2:30 to 4:30 pm), titled “From biodiversity to biotechnology: new approaches to protecting grapevine from downy mildew,” presented by Prof. Silvia Laura Toffolatti from the University of Milan.
The second session is scheduled for May 12 (2:30–4:30 pm). The lecture will focus on the application of ONT (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) for the discrimination of mutations involved in resistance to plant protection products in populations of plant pathogens, delivered by Dr. Lorenzo Borghi of Syngenta Crop Protection (Stein, Switzerland).
The third meeting, scheduled for May 13, will be dedicated to the diagnosis of plant diseases and insects through the sense of smell of dogs (2:30–4:30 pm), presented by Dr. Fabio Mosconi from CREA-DC (Rome). This will be followed by a lecture (4:30–6:30 pm) by Dr. Agata Morelli from UNIBO entitled: “Digital agriculture and integrated pest management: smart tools for monitoring and controlling plant pests.”
