Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have achieved an upper-intermediate level of English language competence (CEFR level B2), with particular attention to the comprehension and use of English in academic and discipline-specific contexts relevant to their field of study.

Course contents

The course includes activities aimed at developing the main language skills through:

  • analysis and comprehension of written texts (academic, popular-science or specialist) relevant to the disciplinary area of the programme;
  • activities focusing on lexical and morphosyntactic development, including linguistic transformation exercises (e.g. word formation);
  • guided revision of relevant grammatical structures and language functions;
  • guided practice in reading and listening comprehension;
  • in-class activities based on materials selected by the instructor, also taking into account students’ academic interests.

The materials used may vary over the course of the semester and will be selected in accordance with the learning objectives of the course.

Readings/Bibliography

Materials will be provided by the lecturer and uploaded to virtuale.unibo.it. There is no distinction between attending and non-attending students.

Assessment methods

The final assessment consists of a written exam, aimed at evaluating students’ language comprehension skills and their use of the lexical and grammatical structures covered during the course.

Exam structure (indicative)

The written exam will last approximately 50 minutes and will consist of 30 questions, including in particular:

  • multiple-choice exercises;
  • linguistic transformation exercises (e.g. word formation).

The texts and exercise types will be consistent with those used during the course and with the relevant disciplinary context.

Further details regarding the structure of the exam will be provided during the course and through official announcements.

There is no distinction between attending and non-attending students.

Students who pass the exam have 48 hours from the publication of the results to refuse the grade by sending an email to the instructor.
