Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will have acquired the essentials of epidemiology for public health, determinants of health, prevention of infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases, environmental and food hygiene, and hospital hygiene.
Course contents
Basics of Epidemiology
Characteristics of observational (ecological, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort studies) and experimental (randomized clinical trials) epidemiological studies
Concept of bias and confounding
Epidemiological measures
Absolute risk and relative risk: relevance to clinical and public health choices
The three steps of epidemiology
Statistical inference, confidence limits
Significance: statistical versus clinical
Finding the scientific evidence and the importance of the epidemiological method for health research and organization
The tools of Evidence Based Medicine: reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, guidelines and diagnostic-therapeutic protocols
Concepts of health technology assessment
The interpretation of clinical trial results
Basics of Applied Hygiene
Causes of disease and risk factors
