85381 - Physical Activity in Frailty and Disability

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students gain an understanding of: - the most frequent causes of FRAILITY in people living in community; - the main profiles of physical or cognitive disability; - the interactions between physical activity and functioning in frailty or impaired people.

Course contents

The course will comprehend four main learning modules, for a total of 18 hours:  

Module A - Disability I: theoretical foundations

  • A.1: History of disability
  • A.2: Older Models of disability
  • A.3: Epidemiology of disability
  • A.4: The current model of disability: the Bio-Psycho-Social Model

Module B - Disability II: disability in practice

  • B.1: Classifying, quantifying and assessing disability: the ICF classification
  • B.2: Lessening the impact of disability

Module C- Frailty

  • C1: The frailty syndrome
  • C2: Falls

Module D - Physical activity in frailty and disability

  • D1: Physical activity in frailty and disability
  • D2: Sport in disability

Readings/Bibliography

Reading materials and pdfs of the slides will be made available on the Virtuale platform

 

Teaching methods

  • In-presence lectures
  • Homework on case studies
  • On-line seminars with external experts

Assessment methods

After the end of each module, a brief MCQ test will be performed on EOL. Thus, a total of 4 MCQs tests will be performed during the course.

At the end of the course, there will be also a final examination based on:

  • a final MCQ test
  • an oral examination, which is aimed at improving the final marks

Thus, to the final vote the following will concur:

  • the results of the 4 ongoing MCQ tests
  • the final MCQ tests
  • the vote on the oral examination 

Students attending the course are invited and encouraged to make an effort to keep their studying up to date with the course content.

During the first lectures detailed instructions on the MCQ test will be provided along with a simulation of the test.
