Learning outcomes
It is the aim of the course to set out the fundamental aspects of the “surplus approach” to the theory of value and distribution for a capitalist economy that characterizes the classical and marxian theoretical framework in its modern formulation according to the contributions of Sraffa and von Neumann. Attention will also be paid to the relationship between theories of value and distribution and theories of accumulation.
Course contents
- The theoretical framework of the classical and marxian approach to the problems of value, distribution and accumulation for the capitalist economy.
- The analytical core of the classical theory of value
and distribution.
- Prices and distribution in the case of a subsistence economy.
- Prices and distribution for an economy with a surplus product.
- Net product, prices and the distribution of income.
- Value, price and exploitation: alternative approaches.
- Distribution, accumulation and effective demand.
- Growth, technical progress and structural change: Pasinetti's model.
