If you are associated with the University of Bologna, either as a student or an employee, you can exercise your right to self-determination by requesting the activation of an alias career.
What it is
The alias career allows for the recognition of a chosen identity, which will be active throughout your career (or until the legal process for name and/or gender amendment is completed). This chosen identity will be reflected on your badge and institutional e-mail address. Further details are outlined in the confidentiality agreement.
How to request it
You can request the activation of your alias career at any time after enrolment:
- Attend an online introductory meeting to learn about the service and its features. The purpose of the meeting is to explain how the service works and to understand your needs as fully as possible, taking into account your current academic situation. The online meeting must be booked through the Virtual Help Desk, selecting from the available dates and times. The use of a webcam is recommended but not mandatory.
- After the meeting, complete and send us the confidentiality agreement through the virtual support service, which outlines the conditions for using the alias identity within the University of Bologna, with reference to mutual obligations and opportunities. No additional documentation (e.g., medical diagnoses or psychiatric evaluations) is required.
Our commitment to inclusion
The activation of an alias career is a fundamental inclusion tool recognized at the University of Bologna, in line with the principles of fairness, respect for diversity, and inclusion that guide the Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
In the fall of 2021, the University adopted the Guidelines of the National Conference of Equality Bodies of Italian Universities and with them the principle of self-determination as the basis for alias careers, allowing access to the service without the obligation to present medical diagnoses or psychiatric evaluations.
Since 2023, the University of Bologna has been conducting an anonymous online survey for students with an active alias career to collect their opinions and suggestions for continuous improvement.
The survey assesses their satisfaction regarding:
- The information provided through various platforms and during the preliminary informational interview.
- The usefulness of the guidelines and the clarity of the confidentiality agreement.
The latest survey showed high satisfaction levels: on a scale from 1 (not at all satisfied) to 5 (completely satisfied), the average score in 2024 was 4.76 for the support received by the administration and 4.62 for the overall experience with the alias career.
