Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to: - explain the principal sociological concepts and debates in contemporary migration studies; - understand migration as a social and cultural process connected to identity, belonging, community and social transformation; - analyse how categories such as “migrant,” “refugee,” “second generation,” “integration” and “cultural difference” are produced and used; - question essentialist understandings of culture and recognise culture as relational, dynamic and contested; - examine how migration experiences are differentiated by gender, race, class, generation, nationality and legal status; - understand how migrants create transnational relationships, identities, memories and forms of belonging across national borders; - interpret and critically compare academic texts, life stories, media materials, visual sources and other forms of cultural evidence; - communicate ideas effectively in English through academic writing, oral presentations, collaborative activities and student-led discussions.
