Carla De Tona has expertise in the fields of international migration, gender, race and ethnicity, Italian diaspora studies, memory and narratives, sociology of education, and qualitative research methodologies. She has published extensively on these topics and has worked in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Trinity College Dublin, where she also worked as a Research Associate and Lecturer. She later held positions as Research Associate and Research Fellow at the University of Manchester.
Prior to her current position in the Department of Political and Social Sciences, she was a Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Business Law at the University of Bologna. As an independent researcher, she has collaborated with various research centres across Europe and has served as an ethics advisor for European research projects. She is currently a member of the editorial boards of the journals Border Crossing and Transnational Education Review.
