C9537 - ENVIRONMENTAL DEMOCRACY AND RESILIENCE

Learning outcomes

The aim of the workshop is to analyse the origins, developments, and challenges of environmental democracy across different times, scales, and spaces. Using virtual exchanges, the workshop will offer students the theoretical framework to understand the functioning of environmental democracy and will invite them to do further research into ecological degradation and socio-political resilient responses to it, working on places of ecological degradation in their own surroundings. The goal is to let students gain a better understanding of environmental democracy as a system built on citizen participation and ecological citizenship, which serve as key conduits for environmental deliberation; at the same time, they acquire deeper knowledge of domestic and international judicial protection of environmental rights.

Course contents

This is a research-oriented, place-based laboratory that combines environmental history, public history, civic engagement, digital humanities, and comparative analysis of delta regions through Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Students investigate how local communities respond to environmental change and compare their findings across continents.

Teaching methods

Virtual exchanges, individual presentations and seminar discussion.

Assessment methods

Assessment of acquired knowledge will include in-class presentations, discussions, and a final projectwork on a topics covered in class.

Attendance is mandatory, and no exceptions will be made for students who do not attend.
