32592 - Internship (2) (LM)

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Archaeology (cod. 6244)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the Internship the student possesses an in-depth knowledge of the practical activities related to the work of the archaeologist through experience in public institutions such as museums, archaeological heritage superintendencies, local institutes in charge of the protection of cultural heritage, organisations events related to archaeological tourism, and specialised publishing in the archaeological sector. He/she will improve knowledge related to both study and work activities, and develop skill solving specific problems, or proposing specific projects or research work. Equally, he/she is able to communicate to a diverse audience. and to apply his skills and update his/her competences within the three areas of learning envisaged by the degree course: archaeologica, historical-epigraphical and technical-scientific.

Course contents

The curricular internship is a training activity included in the study plan and aimed at completing university education through practical experience at institutions or companies affiliated with the University of Bologna, enabling students to acquire professional skills and the corresponding University Educational Credits (CFU).

The Degree Programme offers the following internship activities:

  • Internship 1 (6 CFU – 150 hours);
  • Internship 2 (6 CFU – 150 hours);
  • Internship abroad (6 CFU – 150 hours);
  • Internship abroad in preparation for the final dissertation (6 CFU – 150 hours).

Internship activities may be carried out at University of Bologna facilities or at affiliated public or private institutions, either in Italy or abroad. Within the Master's Degree Programme in Archaeology, preference is given to internships undertaken at affiliated public or private institutions that do not involve excavation practice, as excavation training is provided through other educational activities. In general, internships in libraries, although they perform an important function, are not normally consistent with the specific objectives of the Degree Programme.

The learning objectives and activities to be carried out are agreed upon with the host institution and verified by the academic tutor to ensure that they are consistent with the educational pathway of the Degree Programme.

The procedures for activating an internship, the application process, and the available opportunities are described in the Study > Internships section of the Degree Programme website and are managed through SOL-Tirocini:
https://studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm

Affiliated institutions regularly publish their internship opportunities in a dedicated database available to students. However, new agreements may also be established according to the needs of the student and/or the host institution, depending on the nature of the proposed internship activities.

For internships abroad, students may also participate in the Erasmus+ Traineeship Mobility Programme:
https://www.unibo.it/it/studiare/esperienze-allestero/tirocini-estero/erasmus-mobilita-per-tirocinio/erasmus-mobilita-per-tirocinio

At the beginning of each academic year, the Degree Programme organises orientation meetings, also involving external stakeholders, to present the internship opportunities offered by affiliated institutions.

Readings/Bibliography

No specific bibliography is required beyond the activities associated with the internship.

Any recommended readings, supplementary materials, or technical documentation will be indicated by the host institution and the academic tutor according to the activities specified in the training programme.

Teaching methods

The internship consists of a learning experience in a professional environment in which the learning objectives, activities, and methods for acquiring competencies are defined individually by the host institution in agreement with the student and evaluated by the academic tutor before being formalised in the internship programme. Activities are therefore agreed upon on a case-by-case basis according to the type of experience planned and may take place at University facilities or at external institutions, either in Italy or abroad.

Note: As a general rule, internships are carried out in person. The Internship Committee may authorise internships to be conducted in a blended or fully remote format where this is consistent with the training programme or in exceptional circumstances. The Master's Degree Programme in Archaeology normally provides for internships to be carried out in person.

Given the nature of the activities and the teaching methods adopted, attendance requires the prior completion of Modules 1 and 2 of the health and safety training for study environments, available through e-learning:
https://elearning-sicurezza.unibo.it/

Module 2 must be completed at the University of Bologna. Certificates obtained from other institutions may be recognised exclusively for Module 1, in accordance with the procedures established by the University.

For students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), please refer to Teaching Support Tools.

Assessment methods

Assessment is carried out by the academic tutor through monitoring of the activities performed at the host institution and evaluation of the final documentation required by the training programme.

At the end of the internship, students must complete the required procedures through SOL-Tirocini by uploading their attendance record and final report on the activities carried out, as well as completing the evaluation questionnaire. The host institution is also required to complete its final evaluation questionnaire.

Students must then register for an examination session published by the academic tutor on AlmaEsami in order to allow the internship to be officially recorded. The final assessment is expressed as Pass/Fail. Upon successful completion, the internship will be recorded in the student's academic career as a pass.
