Learning outcomes

The student learns to read and critically analyze philosophical texts and to write a philosophical essay.

Course contents

The philosophy workshop aims to provide training in writing and argumentation, and familiarity with editorial conventions used in the scientific community; introduce students to the use of bibliographical tools; and introduce students to the reading of philosophical texts and the writing of a short essay on them.
Work in the workshop requires regular attendance at meetings; therefore, to submit the final essay and qualify, students must attend at least 12 of the 15 classes (equivalent to 24 hours of face-to-face classes).
The Philosophy degree program offers a variety of workshops to choose from (programs and instructors are available on the Philosophy degree program website). Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 40 participants. "Attending" refers to those attending the meetings in person or online, if this option is activated by the instructor.

To register for the workshops, log in to Studenti On Line (studenti.unibo.it/sol/welcome.htm) with your credentials, click the "Prenotazioni" icon, and select the workshop you are interested in. Registration will be open for all workshops starting September 1, 2026, and will close automatically for each workshop after the first three sessions have been held. Only one workshop can be registered at a time. Each list will accept a maximum of 40 registrations.
Attendance will be verified by signature (or via the online platform for distance learning). Given the unfortunate cases of attendance signature forgery in previous years, please note that anyone found to have not provided even one signature in person will be disqualified from the aptitude test for the current academic year. Students will therefore have to wait until the following academic year to be able to attend the Philosophy Workshop again. Similar measures will be taken against anyone submitting exercises copied in whole or in part from other students' texts, whether paper or digital. Please see the plagiarism rules published on the degree program website.Only in cases of justified inability to attend will a substitute program be arranged individually with the instructors responsible for the various modules. These cases are limited to the following:

- People who work and cannot obtain a study permit to attend the workshop; those in this situation must notify the instructor at the beginning of the module, documenting their inability to attend with a statement from their employer;
- People on Erasmus or Overseas programs; those in this situation must promptly document their inability to attend due to their stay abroad.

Workshop Title:
Argument and Disputation: Philosophical Dissertation on Stage
This workshop aims to provide methods and tools for argumentation and exposition, enabling students to articulate philosophical thought through the use of theatrical techniques. Drawing on the medieval tradition of Disputationes quodlibetales, students will be introduced to the art of dissertation through the defense of antinomian philosophical theses. The workshop aims to enhance effective word management, voice control, body language, and stage presence—essential elements for conducting philosophical dialogue and dispute.

To qualify, students will be required to: 1) participate in a five-person group performance on classical and contemporary philosophical issues; 2) submit an individual written dissertation on the same topic, using between 15,000 and 20,000 characters.

The workshop will draw on the experience gained within the student theatre company "Botteghe Spinoza 38".
