14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course (LZ a)

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 6733)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge gained in lessons of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course contents

BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY

In-depth study of methods for determining the concentration of solutions containing proteins or nucleic acids using UV-visible spectrophotometry or fluorescence analysis.

BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY OF NUTRITION

Computer-based exercises in the field of Metabolic and Nutritional Biochemistry using the “Nutriverso” software (Progeo), which guides the user in developing a personalized dietary plan. By employing this innovative and professional software, students carry out a process for designing personalized diets, starting from the measurement of a subject’s energy expenditure, to the evaluation of their nutritional status, and finally to the creation of balanced nutritional programs aimed at the prevention and/or treatment of specific pathologies.

Teaching methods

The laboratory activities in small groups will be carried out after a thorough explanation in classroom lectures of the theoretical principles underlying the exercises, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety regulations for handling products and equipment.

Health and safety training for activities carried out in computer laboratories and similar settings Considering the types of activities involved and the teaching methods adopted, participation in this training activity requires all students—including incoming international students, such as Erasmus students—to complete the General Training Course (Module 1) and the Low-Risk Training Course (Module 2) via E-Learning, available on the following webpage:Students – General and specific training [https://site.unibo.it/tutela-promozione-salute-sicurezza/en/training/students-general-and-specific-training]

Health and safety training for activities carried out in biological, chemical, mechanical laboratories and similar settings Considering the types of activities involved and the teaching methods adopted, participation in this training activity requires all students—including incoming international students, such as Erasmus students—to complete the General Training Course (Module 1) and the High-Risk Training Course (Module 3) via E-Learning, available on the following webpage:Students – General and specific training [https://site.unibo.it/tutela-promozione-salute-sicurezza/en/training/students-general-and-specific-training]

Assessment methods

The laboratory activities contribute to achieving the educational objectives of the General and Metabolic Biochemistry module.

Oral examination (refer to the Metabolic Biochemistry course).
