78057 - STORIA DEL NUOVO TEATRO (1)

Academic Year 2026/2027

  • Teaching Mode: In-person learning (entirely or partially)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Drama, Art and Music Studies (cod. 6637)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student is familiar with the main artistic experiences of the New Theatre, knows how to contextualise them historically, has a good command of theoretical-methodological aspects (production context, creative process, stage writing, performance and participation) and knows how to apply them to the analysis of a spectacular text.

Course contents

The course traces the historical development of the concept of ‘New Theatre’ and examines the key international and Italian artistic movements which, from the second half of the twentieth century onwards, contributed to a wide-ranging and complex rethinking of forms of expression and of organisational and professional practices, marking a transformation from the past in terms of production, dramaturgy, audience reception and audience participation. Particular attention will be given to the critical analysis of selected productions by the Living Theatre, Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Peter Brook, Carmelo Bene, Carlo Quartucci, Mario Ricci, Dario Fo and Giuliano Scabia.

Through the viewing of audiovisual material and the study of theoretical, dramaturgical and iconographic texts, the course will identify and analyse the historical foundations, social and cultural contexts, theoretical and methodological aspects, forms of live performance, expressive languages and specific economic and organisational models of the New Theatre.

Teaching methods

Lectures are face-to-face and consist of phases of explanation, appreciation of audiovisual materials, readings of theoretical and critical texts, questions, discussion and group work. Meetings with artists and scholars are scheduled. Viewings of performances in city theaters form an integral part of the course.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of an oral test with open-ended questions on the topics covered in class and on the recommended reading list.

Active participation in classroom discussion and working groups is an element of evaluation for those who attend.

The aim of the oral exam is to assess the student’s ability to apply their knowledge and to make the necessary logical and deductive connections. Final mark scale:

Knowledge of a wide range of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices regarding critical analysis, command of specialist terminology → 25–29;

Knowledge of a limited number of topics covered in the course and the ability to analyse independently only on purely
practical matters, expressed in correct language → 20–24;
