Learning outcomes

Learning some basic concepts for the understanding of geologic bodies, and rocks that constitute them. Reading and interpreting the geologic elaborates. Learning some notions of applied geology, essential for the correct use of engineering techniques in the field of civil works, with particular reference to geologic hazards.

Course contents

Prerequisites / Recommended Background

To successfully attend the course, students are expected to have a basic knowledge of physics, inorganic chemistry, and physical geography acquired during their secondary education and previous university studies. Students who are not familiar with the fundamental concepts of Earth dynamics are encouraged to review introductory high-school-level textbooks or equivalent materials before the course.

As the course is delivered entirely in Italian, a good command of the Italian language is required to fully understand the lectures, teaching materials, and assessment activities.

Course Contents

The course is divided into two modules.

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Geology

This module provides students with the knowledge and skills required to:

  • identify the main types of rocks and soils, both in hand specimens and in the field;
  • read and interpret geological maps, stratigraphic columns, and geological cross-sections;
  • understand the main geodynamic processes and their role in the development of seismic, volcanic, and hydrogeological hazards.

Module 2 – Geo-hydrological Hazards

This module focuses on:

  • detailed geomorphological mapping;
  • the main investigation techniques and monitoring tools for landslide processes;
  • risk prevention strategies and hazard mitigation measures.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to interpret the terminology, contents, and key information contained in geological reports prepared in support of the design and construction of engineering works.

Teaching methods

The course includes classroom lectures and practical exercises in small groups, complemented by videos and seminars held by experts.

To enable students to test their learning in the field, study trips will be organised towards the end of the course to the Southern Alps and/or the Northern Apennines.

 

 

Assessment methods

Learning is assessed through a written exam lasting at least 90 minutes, consisting of open-ended questions, practical exercises, and multiple-choice questions with a penalty for incorrect answers.

Students who demonstrate knowledge of the origin of rocks and cartographic features will achieve a passing grade. Higher marks will be awarded to those who show an understanding of the technical issues related to the rocks and cartographic features they describe.

Failure to pass the exam may result from insufficient knowledge of key concepts, possibly compounded by inadequate use of technical language.

The lessons are conducted using the equipment available in the classroom and cartographic materials.
