Learning outcomes

The global aim of this course, which includes lectures and language classes - is to provide students with an expert knowledge of a number of aspects of Spanish linguistics, enabling them not only to communicate effectively in Spanish, but also to think critically about and describe the metalinguistic factors at play in language use. This aim will be achieved by providing students with theoretical knowledge related to one or more of the following areas of Spanish linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics and corpus linguistics. The focus of the course will be on real language use, with authentic texts (written and/ or spoken, belonging to different registers) and electronic language corpora used as examples. Language classes aim to improve students' linguistic competence; over the two year period students knowledge of English should reach an equivalent level to C2 in accordance with the European framework in all four abilities. These classes will work in connection with the lectures to improve students' writing skills in particular.

OBJECTIVES

During the language practice classes (36 hours) held by Pilar Asarta (https://www.unibo.it/sitoweb/mariadel.asarta), students will work on specific linguistic aspects to achieve excellent language proficiency, thereby enabling them to make the most of the content and practice covered in the main lectures.

The practical classes are aimed, on the one hand, at consolidating and enhancing the student’s language skills and, on the other, at deepening linguistic and discursive aspects of Spanish.

Language classes will train students in argumentative and expository academic writing (C1/C2 CEFR level), and they will involve class discussion on notions presented in written work. For exam preparation, emphasis will be placed on writing extended essays and academic essays in Spanish, especially on the issue of variation. Special attention will be paid to the linguistic differences between Italian and Spanish, while some specific aspects related to vocabulary, grammar, and pragmatics will be reviewed.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Erasmus+ (incoming)

This course is taught in the 1st semester of the academic year (september-december). Only those incoming students who complete their stay (first semester) starting in September will be admitted to the course.

ERASMUS+ students should contact the instructor for SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 EXERCICES (Pilar Asarta) and the professor for SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 (lezioni frontali, Ana Pano Alamán) within the first two weeks of the course to be properly informed about the required language level, the programs, and the exam methods for both parts of the course.

Erasmus+ students who have not contacted both Asarta and Pano Alaman in October will not be admitted to the exam for both parts of the course.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods will focus on developing advanced communication skills:

• Exercises to develop the four skills (oral and written comprehension and production), with an emphasis on textual coherence and cohesion, and vocabulary;
• Analysis and production of authentic and complex texts;
• Linguistic reflection on advanced structures and linguistic register;
• Self-correction and error analysis to encourage independent study.

Assessment methods

Assessment of written language proficiency (beginning level C1 CEFR):

• For all students, both attenders and non-attenders, the written exam will consist of a 400-word essay on a theme connected to topics dealt with during the course.
• The written exam lasts 90 minutes. The essay will be assessed at level C1 of the Common European Framework. The use of bilingual or monolingual dictionaries is not permitted.
• Apart from content, maximum accuracy in lexis and grammar is essential to obtain the highest grade (30/30). A minimum score of 18/30 is required to pass the exam.The paper will be assessed according to the skills required for C1 level of the Common European Framework. Up to 15 points are awarded for language accuracy and 15 points for content.
  

The use of AI is prohibited. Any use constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

The examination relating to the language classes accounts for 1/3 of the final grade.

IMPORTANT: The written lecture test is a preparatory test for the SPANISH LINGUISTICS 1 oral exam (lezioni frontali).

Additional information

The exam is normally the same for all students, attenders and non-attenders.
