Learning outcomes

The student knows the linguistics of the Russian language in a deepened way (phonology, morphosyntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics, stylistics and linguistics of the corpora). At the end of the two years course, the student is able to apply such knowledge by means of the use of suitable tools, the textual analysis; he/she knows how to use the learning methods which are developed in order to deepen and update in autonomy his/her own knowledge; he/she knows how to plan a linguistic search in a correct way. Through practical exercises during these 2 years, his/her communicative competences within all the linguistics abilities progress up to the level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference, which allows students to effectively interpret the partner-linguistic and cultural codes in any subject within a communicative relationship.

Course contents

The course, which is a continuation of the approach to textual analysis already addressed in the first year of the course, will be divided in two modules: the first will include the analysis of some genres of technical- scientific and literary texts with an in-depth study of their linguistic structures. Morphosyntactic and stylistic topics of particular complexity will be dealt with, related to the assigned texts.  

The second module (vedi https://www.unibo.it/sitoweb/sara.polidoro2/didattica) will initially provide an introduction to dialogic interpretation as a theoretical basis for linguistic mediation between Russian and English. This will be followed by practical exercises, including preparatory exercises for developing listening and active comprehension skills, memorization and summarization, sight translation, and role-play, i.e., dialogues simulating conversations mediated by an interpreter. The dialogue scripts will be prepared in advance by the teacher or constructed together with the students, who will interpret from and into the two languages, sometimes playing the part of one of the two interlocutors. The topics covered will relate to the social, health, commercial, and socio-political fields.Class attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended.

The theoretical course is associated with language exercises (практический курс -36 hours), which are an integral part of it, both in written and oral verification. The exercises allow the student to acquire dialogical (oral) and compositional (written) skills regarding the topics covered. In the practical course, students will also work on vocabulary and phraseology relevant to the types of texts under examination. There will be exercises of translation from Italian into Russian and of linguistic mediation (only for students who know Italian language).

Teaching methods

Frontal lecture carried out with the help of PP presentations, analytical and communicative method. The lessons will always be interactive. Students will be able to do critical use of AI to assess text analysis during the preparatory phase.
Listening to audio recordings is recommended to develop comprehension and improve pronunciation. Text analysis exercises will be assigned throughout the course; students may complete these independently and receive corrections from the instructor. Examples of completed and corrected analyses will be available on the virtual platform.

Assessment methods

The final assessment of the skills acquired consists of three parts: a written text analysis (for the first module) and a language assessment by the language assistant, which will be carried out during the last lessons of the practical course (Exercises). For the mediation module, there will be an oral exam, which will consist of sight translation from English into Russian and sight translation from Russian into English of two texts of approximately 200 words. The texts will cover the topics covered during the lessons of the second module.

In accordance with the Guidelines on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) provided by the University of Bologna, Profile 1 will be applied to exams: "The use of AI tools during the exam is prohibited in any form, including chatbots, text generators, advanced translators, content synthesizers, and tools integrated into devices. The assessment criteria will be the candidate's oral and written language skills and their ability to analyze texts and use mediation techniques.

The written exam, lasting 3 hours, will focus on the analysis of a text with a topic and textual genre compatible with those covered during the lessons, to be completed with the aid of a monolingual dictionary, but without a computer.
Passing the written exam remains valid for 4 exam sessions. The final grade recorded will be the average of the scores from the written exam and the oral mediation exam, including the language proficiency assessment related to the language course. All components contributing to the average must be passed. Passing the Russian Linguistics 1 exam is a prerequisite for the Russian Linguistics 2 exam.

Teaching tools

Use will be made of the textbooks as well as PP presentations, audiovisual materials, and online materials available to the student. Any other materials will be provided to students on the Virtuale platform.

Non-substantial use of generative AI is permitted. Non-substantial use: This occurs when GenAI is used merely as a tool to support the productivity of academic activities. For example, it constitutes non-substantial use when GenAI is used to gather information on a specific scientific or educational topic, or as a language or translation assistant, excluding cases in which such activities represent an essential aspect of research or education.
