from Sep 23, 2026 to Dec 10, 2026
Learning outcomes
This course provides foundamental knowledge on agricultural and horticultural machinery used in green area management. Students will develop skills in the selection, calibration, and operation of equipment for the maintenance and restoration of public and ornamental green spaces. Emphasis will be placed on safety standards, and technical terminology.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe the main types of machinery used in green maintenance.
- Select and properly calibrate machinery based on specific horticultural tasks.
- Evaluate the most appropriate equipment and techniques for various green space contexts.
- Understand and apply technical standards and safety regulations.
Course contents
- Unit 1: Introduction to technical physics and mechanisation; internal combustion and electric engines; tractors and two-wheel tractors (6 hours).
- Unit 2: Machinery for soil cultivation, seeding, fertiliser and pesticide application; safety regulations (12 hours).
- Unit 3: Mowers and turf maintenance equipment (8 hours).
- Unit 4: Equipment for sports field construction and maintenance (football, golf) (6 hours).
- Unit 5: Urban green management, tree maintenance; introduction to tree stability sensors (2 hours).

Textbooks are available or reservable at the Palazzo Vespignani Library (Via G. Garibaldi 24, Imola).
Lecture slides and supplementary materials will be provided, but are not a substitute of the textbooks.
Teaching methods
- Lectures with multimedia presentations.
- Classroom experiments and short exercises.
- Computer lab sessions for practical data processing and spreadsheet development.
- Guest seminars and a field visit for real-world applications understanding.
Given the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance of this course requires the completion of Modules 1 and 2 via e-learning and participation in Module 3, which provides specific training on health and safety in study environments. Information on the dates and attendance arrangements for Module 3 is available in the relevant section of the degree programme website.
Assessment methods
Learning outcomes are assessed through a written examination. The test consists of calculation exercises, multiple-choice questions, and open questions.
There are 4 calculation exercises, each worth 3 points for a correct answer and 0 points for an incorrect or missing answer. There are 16 multiple-choice questions, each worth 0.5 points for a correct answer and 0 points for an incorrect or missing answer. There are 8 open questions, each worth 2 points for a correct answer and 0 points for an incorrect or missing answer.
Students have 120 minutes to complete the written examination. The use of supporting materials, including textbooks, notes, and electronic devices, is not permitted during the examination. The use of AI is also prohibited.
The highest possible grade for complete and correct answers is 30 with honours. A minimum grade of 18/30 is required to pass the examination.
This course is integrated with Irrigation and Drainage Systems; therefore, the final grade will be the arithmetic mean of the grades obtained in the two courses.
*Students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) or temporary or permanent disabilities are advised to contact the relevant University office well in advance (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/it ). The office will propose any appropriate accommodations, which must be submitted to the course instructor for approval at least 15 days in advance. The instructor will assess their suitability, also in relation to the course learning outcomes.
